How to become a fire engineer

Fire engineers spend years training, learning and getting qualifications. Most jobs in the fire safety industry require technical and/or scientific qualifications.

Becoming a future fire engineer

There are several educational routes to help support you into a fire engineering career. Explore the options available to you.

Most engineering degree courses require A-levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification in maths, physics, chemistry, environmental science, or applied science. Some careers in fire safety may need A-levels or level 3 qualifications in other subjects such as electronics, design, statistics, computing or psychology.

Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you will be an employee and earning a wage, working alongside experienced staff, gaining job specific skills and will have time for training and study related to your role. Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level. To find apprenticeships in the UK, visit the UK Government website.

Fire and rescue services in the UK offer apprenticeships which will equip you with the skills and knowledge you will need to be a firefighter within a modern fire and rescue service. Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you could be eligible to join the IFE as a Technician member.

Many fire engineering firms also offer apprenticeships which will enable you to gain hands on experience alongside your studies. Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you'll have gained the skills and knowledge needed to continue your fire engineering career.

Many universities around the world offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a range of fire engineering subjects. New courses become available all the time, so try searching the internet for “fire engineering degree UK” or visit the UCAS website. The requirements for studying at university vary, but typically you may need A-levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications with 96 UCAS points including maths, physics, chemistry, environmental science or applied science.
