Gary Howe will be presenting a CPD session on the Fire Safety challenges of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) alongside the development of suitable and sufficient Fire Management Strategies for stakeholders. The presentation will cover important topics such as navigating codes and standards, selection of appropriate automatic fire detection and fixed fire protection, fire and rescue service expectations and requirements including appropriate hazard assessments and spacings for BESS sites. In addition, the session will cover lessons learnt to date and appropriate fire safety risk control measures for BESS sites.
Gary is a Senior Risk Engineer at Zurich with over 35 years' experience. Gary is a subject matter expert in the field of fire safety of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and fixed fire protection covering sprinkler, water mist, gaseous, deluge systems and automatic fire detection. Gary is a Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and President of his local branch of the IFE. Gary is a registered assessor with the Institution of Fire Engineers undertaking reviews, mentoring and support to individuals to achieve internationally recognised professional fire engineering qualifications. Gary is a regular contributor to the International Fire Professional Journal (the journal of the Institution of Fire Engineers) with over twelve articles published to date. Gary has extensive field engineer experience coupled with management of accounts and the development and nurture of successful collaborative relationships with clients and stakeholders in the UK and internationally. He offers a high level of pragmatism, technical competency and solution-based results to clients. Based at home, he travels regularly internationally to undertake site assessments.
