Choose the right membership for you

Are you looking to join the IFE for the first time, or would you like to understand your options to regrade your membership? We have different membership types designed to recognise you at different stages of your career, whether you are already working in fire or just starting out.

To help guide you, we have taken steps to make it as easy as possible for you to choose the most appropriate IFE membership.

Our online quiz asks a short series of questions to guide you towards the most appropriate membership type and redirect you back to the relevant page for more information. From there you can start your application online.

Alternatively, you can use our membership matrix to check whether you qualify for a certain grade based on your experience and qualifications. Then head to our Individual Memberships page to view further details and apply.

Compare the number of years you have worked in fire with the level of qualification you hold to determine which membership option might be right for you. If you are unsure whether your qualification will be suitable, check it against our list of worldwide qualifications.

Turn your qualification into membership

Use our IFE Accepted Qualifications Listing to check if your qualification has been scrutinised by the Membership Applications Assessment Panel (MAAP).

The Accepted Qualifications Listing can be found here

MAAP assess qualifications in conjunction with other elements of an application; please note that qualifications alone will not result in IFE membership.

In order to be acceptable for membership purposes, qualifications must meet the minimum requirements specified for the grade that is being applied for. This means that they must be at, or above, the specified level and of a minimum size in terms of the number of hours of study required to achieve the qualification. Please see the matrix below.

Qualifications are listed by the country the awarding organisation/body is based. Qualifications awarded by the IFE are shown under the UK listing.

If your country and/or fire engineering related qualification are not listed here, please send full details (including course module breakdown/syllabus and credit equivalency/number of hours study) and your certificate to membership@ife.org.uk for consideration.

If you are a representative from an awarding body and feel that your qualification has been listed below incorrectly, please contact membership@ife.org.uk with full details.

If your qualification is regulated, third party accredited or a government body qualification, then there is no charge to join the list.

If your qualification meets none of the criteria above, then it must become a Recognised Educational Programme.
