What course are you currently studying?

At the time that I joined the Institution of Fire Engineers, I was working on my master’s thesis, for a Master of Science degree in Fire Safety Engineering at Ghent University.

What attracted you to this course?

I have a keen interest in renewable energy and fire safety, and I started considering potential applications that these two fields can be combined. During my research, I discovered that the number of solar panel fires are on the rise. Also, I wanted to improve my fire modelling skills and that is why evaluating fire spread underneath solar panels by means of CFD simulations seemed like the perfect opportunity for me.

How did you first learn about the Institution of Fire Engineers?

I became aware of the IFE through the program coordinators and secretary of my university. They took the initiative to inform me and my fellow students about the advantages of joining IFE and the opportunities that becoming a member of IFE could bring to us.

What are you hoping to get out of your IFE membership?

I was initially drawn to IFE for the opportunities to access IFE journals and connect with professionals in the field for potential career opportunities. But soon after joining IFE, I discovered that there are a lot of other benefits to being a member. For example, continuous professional development and the possibility to engage in special interest groups.

What difference has being a student member of the IFE had on you?

It has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the field of fire safety engineering because I have been able to connect with people who
share the same passion as mine. I’ve made friendships via IFE and I have been able to collaborate with other people in the UK and Canada as an example. On a professional level, it has guided me to the path that I can become a responsible, competent and capable engineer.

Are you going to be working towards other IFE registers or a higher membership grade once you have finished your studies?

Absolutely! The CPD helps towards becoming a competent engineer by enhancing the skills, knowledge and expertise in the field of fire safety.

What is your favourite thing about your IFE membership?

I have a passion for fire engineering, and I find a great value in connecting with like-minded people who share the same interest with me. That is why I like and appreciate IFE because it has created a community where the professionals in the field come together and expand our knowledge collectively.
