As part of our amplified efforts to reach new audiences and illuminate formal recognition, quarter 2 has seen the IFE reach significant milestones. With an evolving presence within the UAE and across the built environment, our presence at recent events such as the Fire Safety Event, BSF, UK Construction Week and FIREX have all illustrated the need for collaborative working. Evolving fire safety frameworks for sustainable construction methods is of paramount importance and we’re continuing to consult government on the safety issues concerning lithium-ion batteries and greener construction methods.
Evolving fire safety practises across the UAE
Recently, our CEO, Steve Hamm, attended the IFSJ Leaders in Fire and Safety Conference in Dubai, the annual event that brings together leading figures across the Middle East in fire safety.
With the development of formal recognition remaining key, Steve signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in partnership with the Assistant Director General for Fire and Rescue Affairs at Dubai Civil Defence (DCD). This traditional ceremony formalises professional relationships and solidifies an intended line of action moving forward.
Over the past few years, there has been substantial advancement in fire safety procedures in the UAE. This partnership enables Dubai Civil Defence (DCD) to work with the IFE to drive improvements and innovation in their role of protecting the city of Dubai, in line with their mission to make Dubai the safest city in the world. The IFE is thrilled to be collaborating closely with DCD and will release further updates in due course.
UK Construction Week
Earlier this month, we exhibited at the largest built environment event in the UK, UK Construction Week, where Steve took part in a panel discussion, Fire Safety Question Time with journalist and broadcaster, Victoria Derbyshire, and the Timber, Fire Safety, Modern Methods of Construction and Sustainable Building for the Future panel. The panel discussion was a fantastic addition to the event and the board discussed improving safety practices, changing of cultures and behaviours and fire safety legislation concerns regarding sustainable construction. Steve expressed the need for fire safety professionals to be involved in every stage of construction and be party to approving the fire safety aspect of the design. The institution welcomes this opportunity of presence at events based on the future of the built environment and will continue to lead conversations and lobby for change.
International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference
The International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference which took place at FIREX, was opened by our International President, Peter Wilkinson. Peter kicked off the conference with a round up of activity the IFE is currently working on to make changes and highlight the ongoing issues with electric vehicles and sustainable construction methods. Our membership team was present at the conference and were able to speak with delegates and discuss membership opportunities and the benefits of Employer Partner membership.
Continuing to promote proactivity
Fire safety must be given high consideration throughout the whole building design process as the built environment develops. Fire safety precautions must be considered and put into practice at every stage, from the basic concept and planning stage to building and continuous maintenance. We can only guarantee the security of those who reside in, work in, and visit our buildings and communities by taking a comprehensive and proactive approach to fire safety.
