Please introduce yourself
My name is Dean Morris and I’m a self-employed fire consultant with a keen interest in passive fire protection and historic buildings. I am currently studying an MEng in Fire Engineering at UCLAN and outside of this, you will find me volunteering with the IFE Southern Branch committee or working towards publishing research papers.
Tell us about your career
Having started as a Fire Safety Officer in Harrods, I’ve been fortunate enough to work in some of the most iconic and historic buildings in the UK. Alongside this, I am fortunate to work all over the world where there are not just different standards, but hugely different cultures to consider when managing risk and helping to keep people safe.
Can you describe a typical working day?
As a consultant, no two days are the same. One day I could be assisting with external wall surveys in Tottenham, and the next I could be in South America giving fire safety advice to someone who doesn’t speak the same language.
What contributed to your decision to become an IFE registrant?
I believe that professional registration demonstrates my commitment to professional standards and to developing and enhancing my competence. By doing this through an industry leader such as the IFE I believe it provides credibility and wider respect from the industry.
How have you benefitted from being an IFE Engineering Technician registrant?
The prestige of the title, along with the addition of post-nominals, has helped me to prove my competence which has in turn increased job opportunities. For everyone in the industry, becoming an EngTech will improve your CV and may lead to wider employment opportunities, career progression and promotions.
Would you recommend joining the IFE to others?
Absolutely. There isn’t a bigger name within the industry, and if you really want to be part of a community that cares and helps each other and the industrydevelop, then there isn’t anywhere better.
What is your favourite thing about your IFE professional registration?
It helps you to connect with other members around the world and build working relationships with specialists in the field.
