How we’ll achieve our outcomes, by working together
Every one of us at Wales & Western has a job to do, a target to hit, a goal to achieve. Yet as individual as these different focal points may be, they all work together. They depend on each other. We depend on each other. It’s the same when we set targets for the year ahead. Yes, they may be in different areas, but ultimately, they are all interlinked. Only by hitting all targets together can we achieve our outcomes. This year we have four big areas that will make the biggest difference to us, and our customers.
By us working together as one bigger team that we’ll achieve our ambitious targets. It’s about local teams having the freedom, power, and support to deliver success. It’s about thinking outside of our traditional team functions and boundaries to overcome challenges. It’s about all of us, working as ‘one team’, towards common goals.
Empower and transform
We work collaboratively with high-quality, expert supply-chain partners to design, develop and deliver great outcomes for passengers, freight and funders. Over the longer term, we focus in on a smaller group of trusted supply-chain partners, building trust and reducing risk, through ever deeper collaboration.
Upgrade and renew
The railway doesn’t stand still. Futureproofing it requires constant upgrading and renewal. With that in mind, 2024/25 is a big year for our region. We’ll be spending £527m to make our railway safer, more reliable, and more resilient. We’ll also be spending £272m enhancing the railway – creating new stations, opening new lines, and making stations more accessible for every single rail user – often in ways that can literally transform people’s lives. Something that we’re all proud and privileged to be able to do.
Focusing our efforts on things that people value most
Many things go into making a great railway. Safety. Reliability. Resilience. Facilities. All of them boil down to one thing: the customer. Without them, the folks who use the railway – be they passenger or freight customers – we wouldn’t have a railway at all. For us, every outcome must line up with that end goal: delivering on the things that our customers value. Doing that will be the measure of our success. Here in Wales & Western we are determined to always ask ourselves how our actions connect with these outcomes. And if they don’t, then we should challenge why we’re doing them.
