Through a range of events and on-demand CPD webinars, we’re helping our members to tackle the evolving challenges from climate change impacts and to understand the risks from new green technologies.
Putting sustainability at the heart of Fire Conference 2022
We continue to build and participate in a programme of events to improve knowledge and understanding across the industry. This includes Fire Conference 2022, taking place next month on 18th October.
Organised collaboratively between the Institution of Fire Engineers, Fire Protection Association, Fire Sector Federation, and the National Fire Chiefs Council, this year's agenda has been carefully created to address key challenges our members are facing.
Focusing on climate change specifically, our chief executive Steve Hamm will be presenting on ‘managing fire safety in a sustainable world’ at the event. Alongside this, our chair, Mark Chubb, will take part in a panel debate to discuss the fire safety sustainability challenge and our alternative fuels co-ordinator, Paul Trew, will be leading a workshop on electric vehicles and alternative fuels.
Tapping into our global community of fire specialists
As the world continues to change at a rapid pace, we are working closer than ever with our international branches to capture the knowledge and insight that is needed to overcome challenges.
This week our Norfolk and Suffolk branch will be hosting a CPD event on ‘Emerging Risks: Fire Safety for Tomorrow’. This will include sessions on the future impact of climate change, battery storage systems and a look at the introduction of electric vehicles into the built environment from a fire and rescue service perspective.
Also taking place this week, Fire NZ 2022 opens for three days of plenary sessions, workshops and networking. Hosted by the FPA New Zealand, IFE New Zealand Branch and SFPE New Zealand, the agenda features presentations on electric vehicle fires, hydrogen safety, and environmental impacts excluded from current building design considerations.
Keeping pace with climate change
Committed to ensuring members are well informed with industry trends and new ways of working, our CPD Hub is constantly evolving to help provide the best practice guidance and real-world insight members need to keep pace with climate change.
Some examples of current CPD Hub content focusing on climate change include:
- Alternative fuel vehicle fire risks in tunnels
- How to prevent thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries
- The changing risks to firefighters from sustainable construction
- Solar panels and fire safety
- Fire safety of parking garages with electrically powered vehicles
- Energy storage systems
Whether it is addressing the impacts of climate change such as flooding and wildfires, or maintaining the safety of new technologies to help mitigate the impact of climate change, we’re committed to supporting our members to ensure they have the knowledge and insight they need to keep pace with our fast changing world. Members can support their professional development by visiting the CPD Hub here.
“Making sure our members are equipped to deal with climate change impacts and mitigation measures, we’re committed to improving knowledge, experience and expertise across the fire engineering industry.”
