Blog: Technical Director forecast for 2024

Collaboration and Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Working closely with our Technical Committee, Paul is eager to delve into the work carried out by the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Recognising the crucial role played by dedicated IFE volunteers, he aims to foster collaboration and ensure that insights produced by SIGs are shared widely within the membership, driving our ethos of global learnings.

In his recent update to members, Paul emphasised the significance of shaping laws, academia, and providing networking opportunities for members with shared interests and expertise in different subsidiaries of fire engineering.

Fire Risk Assessor competency

A key aspect of the IFE's work this year involves Fire Risk Assessor competency, led by Technical Advisor Ian Bailey. Currently collaborating with the Home Office and key partners, Ian's focus is on establishing international standards and guidelines for Fire Risk Assessors. This remains crucial in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire and the subsequent Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety led by Dame Judith Hackitt.

Ian’s work has led to the formation of the Fire Risk Assessors Strategy Group, advocating for the third-party certification of Fire Risk Assessors. The team at IFE HQ is actively working towards the IFE's UKAS registration, ensuring compliance with Dame Judith’s recommendations, and providing additional assurance to responsible persons.

Career pathways and future plans

Recognising the need for a clear career pathway for those entering the fire risk assessment sector, the IFE, alongside Paul’s leadership, is keen to develop a pathway for new Fire Risk Assessors. Discussions with training providers are underway to achieve this and we hope to announce information about updated courses later in 2024.

As the year unfolds, we anticipate an exciting and productive 2024 for the IFE, with plans to expand the technical capacity by recruiting an additional Technical Advisor. With a commitment to regular updates throughout the year, Paul will lead the institution towards new heights in technical excellence and fire safety advocacy.

The IFE looks forward to a year of progress, collaboration, and continued dedication to its members and the broader community.
